Interactive Tabletop for a Cafe

Description

A typical visit to the neighborhood café is a deceptively complex task.  This can be a paradox when the impetus for a visit is to take a break and relax.  Adding to the complexity is the fact that cafés are very social places.  The main goals of the interactive tabletop in this context are to address these issues.  First, the interactive tabletop manages complexities that exist in the current café experience.  Second, the interactive tabletop adds new interactions not available in the current café experience.  Other priorities in the designing of the video prototype revolved around the aesthetics and behavior of the interface and how these attributes could be appropriated for aesthetic sensibilities and behaviors common to cafés.  Last but very important was a concern that the tabletop would invigorate the café to be a social space.

The interactive tabletop video prototype received the Best Experimental Application award at Savannah College of Art & Design’s Entelechy 2010.

Notes on the Process

Having a bachelors is broadcast & mass communication was very helpful on this project.  I am including a script, as I believe it might prove useful for other designers trying to create video prototypes.  It is a script format that is common to the world of television news and instructional videos.  It has two columns; the left is for character action and dialogue, and the right is for interface behavior.

Note the bracketed letters that accompany actions of the user.  These letters match up to specific points on the green screen.  This made it very easy for the actress to execute the correct behavior without knowing the interface was to actually behave.
